Construction on Christchurch’s new Metro Sports Facility is one step closer as Menard Oceania and sister company March Construction power ahead with site ground improvement works on behalf of main contractor, Ōtākaro Limited.
The Menard March joint venture began installing the first of around 8000 in-ground stone columns at the end of August to prepare the site for main construction work, scheduled to begin in 2019. Work is focused on specialist anti-liquefaction ground Improvement needed to prepare the Metro Sports facility site before construction commences.
Production work commenced in October and is expected to take approximately six months, from start to finish. Menard will use up to four vibroflots to install a network of stone columns over most of the site footprint as pictured.
When completed, the Metro Sports Facility is expected to be the largest aquatic and indoor recreation and leisure venue of its kind in New Zealand. Facilities within 30,000 sq m site will include a 50 m, 10-lane competition swimming pool and a separate diving pool, large aquatic leisure area, five hydroslides and fitness spaces.
