Why is it used?
To improve the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of non-cohesive soils, for the foundations of buildings but also in civil applications and embankments. DC is a cost effective method for sand densification / soil compaction / landfill treatment / unconsolidated fill or soil treatment.
How does it work?
It consists in repeated high energy impacts by a high mass pounder dropped from a large crane to transfer energy into the ground, causing compaction and densification of the ground.
Impact points are set out in a grid pattern for the area to be treated. No additional materials are required beyond backfill for the craters created in the platform surface.
The depth of effective densification is a function of the energy imparted per impact and depths in excess of 16 metres can be compacted. The overall design of the treatment is determined by the total energy imparted per square metre of site area.
