Sydney Metro Waterloo: Pioneering Anchor Installation Excellence

At Menard Oceania was a key player in the Sydney Metro project, one of Australia’s most ambitious public transport initiatives. Located in the bustling urban area of Waterloo Station, this project aims to transform Sydney’s transport landscape with 31 metro stations and over 66 kilometers of new metro rail.

Our role in Sydney Metro

As a leading specialist in geotechnical engineering, Menard was entrusted with the critical task of installing over 900 No. anchors to secure the secant pilled retention wall. Our expertise ensured the structural integrity of the station box, which spans the full length of a city block and has a design depth of 30 meters.

Ground Conditions and Challenges

The site presented unique challenges due to its ground conditions, which included several meters of undrained sands, overlying clays of varying stiffness, followed by shale and sandstone bedrock. Our comprehensive assessment of water levels was crucial in devising the most efficient anchoring methodology, especially given that two of the three anchor rows were situated below the water table.

Innovative Anchor Installation Solution

Over the course of six months, Menard successfully installed over 23,000LM of anchors using a combination of advanced drill rigs and an innovative anchor installation system. Our anchors were meticulously fabricated in our purpose-built fabrication workshop, ensuring precision and quality before being delivered to the site. The use of a hydraulic installation reel allowed for efficient and effective anchoring, contributing significantly to the project’s success.
